Hi, my name is Andrew Chartrand and I'm an Industrial Designer from Humber College.

Always Creative Design
Origins

The beginnings of Always Creative Design (ACD) started in 2018 when I got my first 3D printer. It arrived the summer before starting my Bachelors Degree in Industrial Design (more later). I spent that summer printing small trinkets and designing parts for around the house and my RC car. Family member started asking me if I could design them an air duct, siding cover, shelf brace, and even prototype wheel spacers for a drag car.

Experience

A few years into my degree, I educated a company on what 3D printer to buy for their application, as well as teaching employes how to use the 3D printer and software needed to use it.

For my college work placement I worked for a company as their design student, and was lucky enough to get to work with some industrial quality 3D printers. There I was also introduced to SLA 3D printing for the first time, and got both a great understanding of the differences in setup and post processing between FDM & SLA.

My Story

To understand why I chose industrial design as my post-secondary degree you first need to know a little bit about me on a personal level. Growing up a country kid I explored the world through my hands and trial and error, building things and seeing whether they worked or not. Family projects taught me invaluable skills that I continue to carry into my career.

What Is Industrial Design?

The World Design Organization (WDO) - "Industrial Design is a strategic problem-solving process that drives innovation, builds business success, and leads to a better quality of life through innovative products, systems, services, and experiences. Industrial Design bridges the gap between what is and what’s possible. It is a trans-disciplinary profession that harnesses creativity to resolve problems and co-create solutions with the intent of making a product, system, service, experience or a business, better. At its heart, Industrial Design provides a more optimistic way of looking at the future by reframing problems as opportunities. It links innovation, technology, research, business, and customers to provide new value and competitive advantage across economic, social, and environmental spheres.
